  • What are the transportation regulations for Lithium Ion Batteries?

The transportation of Lithium ion batteries is regulated.

  • What is IEC 62133?

For most portable devices that use rechargeable Nickel or Lithium battery systems as a source of power it is now necessary for the batteries to meet the requirements of the IEC 62133. There are now two versions of this standard (IEC 62133-1:2017 for Nickel systems and IEC 62133-2:2017 for Lithium systems).

  • What is the 'UN Manual of Tests and Criteria'?

The Manual of Tests and Criteria contains test methods and procedures to be used for classification of dangerous goods according to the provisions of Parts 2 and 3 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations, as well as of chemicals presenting physical hazards according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). As a consequence, it supplements also national or international regulations which are derived from the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. With regard to the transportation of Lithium ion batteries, The UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Fifth Revised Edition (ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.5 section 38.3) is the relevant section and contains the so called T1-T8 tests which Lithium and Lithium Ion batteries must pass prior to them being offered for transportation.
